Adventure and History

Enjoy touring, swimming and snorkeling.  For the more adventurous try deep sea fishing as the locals are accustomed or take a ride in a large canoe like open boat to watch the dolphin migration.  Should the sea be calm, you may even try to swim along-side these beautiful mammals.

For a rich history experience, visit Stone Town a World Heritage Site trade center with Swahili and Islamic influences.  It’s winding lanes present minarets, carved doorways and 19th century landmarks such as the house of Wonders, a former sultan’s palace.  A trip to the Jozani Forest to see the one of Africa’s rarest primates, the Zanzibar Red Colobus monkey, is also highly recommended.

In the 19th century Zanzibar was the center of the Arab slave trade and sultans became wealthy from ivory exports and brutal slave labor and trade.  Visit the large Anglican Church built over the former slave market, view underground holding cellars as well as a monument to the slaves.

One of Zanzibar’s historic and thriving current industries is spices.  In particular; the main and surrounding islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper.  You will also find fresh vanilla beans, saffron, and cardamom.  Enjoy a lively negotiation with a spice vendor in the main marketplace and bring home wonderful and very affordable gifts.
