  • Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary: Located on Lake Victoria, this sanctuary is accessible by speedboat from Entebbe. It provides a safe haven for rescued chimpanzees and offers an educational and interactive experience.

What to Pack

Prepare for your adventure with the following essentials:

  • Insect Repellent: Protect yourself from insect bites.
  • Waterproof Hiking Boots: Essential for navigating the forest’s sometimes muddy and uneven terrain.
  • Long-Sleeved Clothing: Helps protect against scratches and insect bites.
  • Bottled Water and Snacks: Stay hydrated and energized during the trek.
  • Walking Stick: Useful for maintaining balance on uneven trails.
  • Camera and Binoculars: Capture memories and observe wildlife from a distance.
  • Rain Gear: The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s best to be prepared for rain.

Rules and Regulations

To ensure a safe and respectful experience for both visitors and chimpanzees, it’s important to follow these guidelines set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority:

  • Health Precautions: If you feel sick, especially with flu or a cough, you should not participate in the trek to prevent transmitting illnesses to the chimpanzees.
  • Distance: Maintain a distance of at least 8 meters from the chimpanzees to avoid disturbing them.
  • No Feeding: Do not feed the chimpanzees, as human food can harm their health.
  • Quiet Observation: Avoid making noise while trekking to prevent scaring the animals away.
  • No Flash Photography: Use a camera without a flash to avoid startling the chimpanzees.
  • Environmental Care: Do not litter or pollute the forest. If you need to relieve yourself, do so in a way that minimizes environmental impact.
  • Minimum Age: The minimum age for chimpanzee trekking is 15 years.

Best Time to Visit:

Chimpanzee trekking is possible year-round, but the dry season from June to September and December to January offers the best conditions for spotting chimpanzees. During these months, the forest trails are less muddy, and the thinner foliage makes it easier to see the primates. However, trekking during the wet season can also be rewarding as the forest is lush, and food is abundant for the chimpanzees, making them easier to locate.
